The course "Landscape Conservation", led by Prof. Maria Cristina Fregni, deals with the study, conservation and management of cultural landscapes.
The course was a four-unit module taught as part of the Final Workshop Antico e Nuovo. It invited students to explore the concept of Cultural Landscapes and to develop a detailed analysis of a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape. Our study of the Balinese Subak Landscape is centred on understanding the natural and cultural processes that create and sustain the landscape, and how these agents are included in the management plan. Studying the subak system, we found a complex management and landscape organisation system which maximises crop output with the minimum resource intake through cohesive social coordination. The efficiency and sustainability of the system provides a useful precedent for sustainable land practices, while the history of management of the site provides a meaningful insight into the need for community-based conservation and management in rural cultural landscapes. |
