The online platform Urban Heritage Atlas was a pilot project developed by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in 2022-2023 to support the development of a detailed methodology for the mapping and identification of the diverse values of urban World Heritage sites. Based on the 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL Recommendation) and the framework of urban heritage identity developed in the Fukuoka Outcomes, this project saw 9 cities from all regions of the world undergo a collaborative project between local and national authorities, and the World Heritage Centre, to identify the different values and layers composing their heritage, both local and universal (Outstanding Universal Value). The process included stakeholder interviews, surveys, archival research and mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
This project was developed by the World Heritage Cities Programme under the leadership of Dr Jyoti Hosagrahar, deputy director of the World Heritage Centre, and Dr Alba Zamarbide, programme coordinator. As the project leader, I was responsible for the concept development and approval, development of the case studies, engagement with stakeholders and detailed development of the methodology, with the support of Giacomo Martinis and Mirna Ali Ashraf. |
