The studio "Planning in Historical Contexts", led by Prof. Carlo Peraboni and Chiara Lanzoni, deals with the planning of heritage landscapes to ensure their ongoing maintenance and sustainability.
The workshop was a challenging course that expanded my horizons beyond the realm of traditional practice and into adjacent fields of town planning, landscape design and ecological management. The course consisted in the design of a planning proposal for the Mantuan section of the Po Valley, in a UNESCO designated "Man and the Biosphere" landscape composed of mainly small agricultural settlements dedicated to traditional production. Our proposal centres on the maintenance of the landscape through economic diversification to address the challenges faced by small-scale agriculture in Europe. We propose to create a series of activities, including tourism, events and innovative food practices, that allow the landscape to survive as a living, evolving entity into the 21st century. In terms of design, this is achieved through the creation of a "Network of Places", a series of agricultural centres linked through pedestrian and tourist-friendly paths that promote a closer relationship with the landscape and sustainable transportation options. |
