Following requests from the World Heritage Committee to create a shared database of case studies integrating heritage conservation within the sustainable development framework, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre launched in 2021 the online platform World Heritage Canopy: Heritage Solutions for Sustainable Futures. Originally a pilot project, in two years the platform expanded to have more than 60 case studies. The platform follows a thematic framework that integrates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the World Heritage Convention and climate action, showcasing how heritage conservation can contribute to sustainable development through practical examples. As it was developed initially within the framework of the World Heritage Cities Programme, there is a strong emphasis on the contribution of urban heritage conservation to sustainable urbanisation and development, based on the 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL Recommendation).
This project was developed under the leadership of Dr Jyoti Hosagrahar, deputy director of the World Heritage Centre, and Dr Alba Zamarbide, programme coordinator. As the project leader, I was responsible for the concept development and approval, development of the case studies, engagement with stakeholders and detailed development of the methodology, with the support of two colleagues, Mirna Ali Ashraf and Altynay Dyussekova. |
