The International Workshop "Conservation and Musealisation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Beit Shea'rim" is an intensive course developed by Technion - Israeli Institute of Technology in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, led by Prof. Eran Mordohovich (IS), Rona Evyasaf (IS), Andrea Adami (IT) and Angelo Lorenzi (IT) . Its goal is to expose architecture and landscape architecture students to the complexities of designing a project within an archaeological site.
The workshop consisted of site visits, lectures and meetings with heritage experts, and a final design exercise. It was an intense, challenging experience that exposed me to a wide range of conservation practices within Europe and the Middle East, with an emphasis on practical conservation and site management. At the end of the workshop, the students were asked to make a proposal for the site. This proposal, called "Layers of Diversity", consists of a strategic management and development plan with the goal to prepare the site for public access after its listing as UNESCO World Heritage. Based on an interpretation of the listing criteria, the proposal creates a network of walking paths that allow visitors to explore the different facets of the site: necropolis, archaeological remains and natural elements.
